Botanical Name: Boswellia carteri Birdwood Origin: Ethiopia Processing Notes: Frankincense is harvested from the Boswellia carterii tree, native to the Middle East, and Eastern Africa. Its name is derived from the Old French franc encens, meaning pure incense or literally "free lighting". Collection begins by incising the tree bark with a mengaff, a scalpel-like tool. Just beneath the bark is an oleogumresin and water mixture which exudes from the incision. This liquid mixture forms globules or tears as the water portion evaporates in the hot sun, which takes approximately 14 days. The wound is refreshed and the process is repeated. Only on the third repetition is high quality frankincense of adequate consistency produced. The trees are rested every 5-6 years to insure their viability, and to preserve the livelihood of the collectors.
